Communication Department Internship Requirements: A-B-C

A. Preparing for the Internship - 3 things

1. Register for the Course

In order to register for CM402 Comm. Internship, students must complete these two steps:

1)     Talk to the instructor first.

2)      After talking to the instructor, attach the proposal to an e-mail to the instructor.

3)      After the instructor approves the proposal, have the Internship Contract completed and signed by the organization and submit it to the instructor. Only then is she allowed to register you for the course.

Because students may not register for CM402 until these two steps are complete, it is never too early to begin research and planning for this course.

2. Proposal

The internship proposal must be approved by the instructor before the student asks the organization to complete the Internship Contract. Be sure to address each of the following five points in the proposal:

1.      research about the organization (for example, the history of the organization or department, how it compares to other similar organizations or similar departments in other organizations, its mission, its target publics or clients, etc.);

2.      a general job description from the organization;

3.      justification for the internship as it relate to the student's career goals, how it  will help achieve those career goals, and how it will benefit in other ways;

4.      why you are qualified to do the work (junior or senior class status and any relevant classes or experience); and

5.      how the goals and objectives for the internship are consistent with this department's goals and objectives.

NOTE: remember to always cite sources to avoid plagiarism.

3. Internship Contract

After the instructor approves the proposal, have the organization print and complete the Internship Contract and submit it to the instructor. Only after the instructor receives the contract is she allowed to register the student for the class.

B. During the Internship - 3 things

1. Required Reading, Reflection Papers (10% of course grade)

Interns must read Robert Briner's book Roaring Lambs (ISBN 0-310-59111-2). Write a 1-2 page (double spaced, 12-point type) reflection paper on each of the nine chapters, and attach them to e-mails each week during the internship beginning with the first week. (If the internship is shorter than nine weeks, then be sure to send them regularly by the end of the internship.) Remember, avoid reiterating the chapter. Focus more on what you got out of it and refer to it as needed. The instructor is happy to share an example--just e-mail her to request one.

Some communication majors are fortunate enough to be allowed to take more than one internship course during their time at Emmanuel. When that is the case, the reading requirement for that second internship is Communicating for Life (ISBN 080102237) by Quentin Schultze. Follow the same guidelines for writing papers about each chapter as with Briner's book. [In your proposal (see section above called Preparing for the Internship), you may suggest other books for the instructor to consider for your required reading instead of the Schultze book. The instructor must approve the substitution.]

2. Weekly Timesheets: A) electronic and B) hard copy (70% of course grade)

A. Electronic

Timesheets are due as an e-mail attachment each Friday; late timesheets will receive a grade of zero. You may submit only one late without penalty. Each week, e-mail the instructor a brief description of the following items. If you are employed by the organization, leave out any job-related activities not relevant to this communication internship. Include each of these:

1)              what specific work or task you did,

2)              the time spent for each task,

3)              what about it was beneficial,

4)              what was not,

5)              how you were able to apply classroom-based knowledge to work experience,

6)              identify specific classroom-based knowledge helpful to the work experience, and

7)              any other comments you wish to add.

B. Signed Hard Copies

Each week, you must also print that week's timesheet, have it signed and dated by your supervisor, and mail it to Emmanuel College, Paula Dixon CPO 20, PO Box 129, Franklin Springs, GA 30639. This helps your supervisor realize how much work and what types of work you do each week, and it helps us verify accuracy. These are NOT due each Friday; they are due one day the following week.

3. Performance Evaluation: mid-term (5% of course grade)

Within the first two weeks of the internship, print the Supervisor's Performance Evaluation form and give it to the supervisor at the organization. Be sure s/he understands it is due twice during the internship: 1) the week before mid-term (5% of course grade) and 2) the week before final exams (10% of course grade).

If the internship is on a timeline different from a 15-week semester, the mid-term evaluation is due just before the midway point of the internship, and the end-of-term evaluation is due early in the last week of the internship.

It is the intern’s responsibility to be certain the supervisor completes both evaluations and mails them to the instructor. A final grade can not be posted without it. (The mailing address is on the form.)

C. Finishing the Internship - 2 things

1. Supervisor's Performance Evaluation (10% of course grade)

Two weeks before final exams, remind the supervisor to complete the Supervisor's Performance Evaluation form and mail it to the instructor. See to it this gets done. The mailing address is on the form. It's due the last day of regular classes BEFORE finals week.

2. Student's Course Evaluation (5% of  course grade)

The Student's Course Evaluation is due the last day of regular classes BEFORE finals week. This is not a form but a paper. As you write, you must address the following six points about your internship experience:

1)              the types of lessons you were not able to learn in the classroom environment,

2)              how your classroom experiences (be specific--which courses or assignments) prepared you or did not prepare you for your internship,

3)              whether or not you would recommend the sponsoring organization as a future internship opportunity,

4)              what you might do differently if you could do it again and why,

5)              how our internship course could be improved, and

6)              any other comments you wish to add.
