Frequently Asked Questions
As you read these, you might want to refer to your syllabus
for more specific explanations, or you can always discuss these with the
instructor. These policies apply to all my courses and are considered a part of
each course syllabus.
What if I don't have an e-mail account?
 | Each EC student is assigned a campus e-mail account during
registration. This e-mail can be used for sending and receiving
on-campus or off-campus email. If you have problems with
it, contact EC's Information Technology office on the first floor of the
Aaron Building. |
 | In my courses, students must activate their e-mail accounts
no later than one week into the semester. The
instructor will send and receive information and assignments to and from
students on a regular basis. |
 | The Communication Department relies on e-mail as the
primary way to communicate with majors. You should check your campus e-mail
account at least once a week. |
What if I can't turn in my assignment on the day it's due?
 | You may submit an assignment BEFORE the due date. |
 | A written medical excuse or similar documentation is required if
requesting to submit an assignment after the due date. |
 | Because of the nature of the communication field
and professional work environment, late work is
not eligible to receive full credit. Late work will receive a zero or a
severe grade reduction. |
 | Regardless of excuse, all assignments must be submitted
within one week of the due date. |
What if I am late to class?
 | It is the responsibility of the student to
sign the attendance sheet in each class. |
 | One absence is a 1-point deduction
from the final course average, and one tardy is a 1/2 point deduction from the final course
average. |
 | Leaving class early is counted the same as a
tardy. |
 | If you have or can get a medical excuse for missing all or
part of a class, that written excuse must be submitted to the instructor
within one week. |
What if I am absent on exam day?
 | You should meet with the instructor to arrange to take the
exam BEFORE exam day. |
 | If you are unable to arrange to take the exam before exam
day, a doctor's excuse or similar documentation is required when
rescheduling with the instructor. |
 | All missed exams MUST be taken within
one week of the original exam date regardless of the reason for the
absence. |
 | It is the discretion of the instructor whether or not to
allow a make-up exam. |
 | Make-up exams are not eligible to receive bonus points or
curve points. |
How many classes can I miss? Will absences affect my grade?
 | One absence is a 1-point deduction
from the final course average, and one tardy is a 1/2 point deduction from the final course
average. |
 | If absent because of participation in a
college-sanctioned event (intercollegiate athletics, Singers, etc.), then
your absence is recorded but points will not be deducted from the final course
average. |
 | Leaving class a little early is counted the same as a
tardy. |
 | A medical excuse for missing all or
part of a class must be submitted to the instructor
within one week. |
 | For more information, see EC's
College
Catalog under Class Attendance Policy in the Academic
Information section. |
Research and Citing Sources
APA and MLA
styles are acceptable. For information about plagiarism, please refer to your
course syllabus.
Anything else?
 | Everything should be typed
and double-spaced unless the instructor or syllabus says otherwise. |
 | Always cite any sources--text, images,
concepts, etc. |
 | We tape or record in our department. We do not film anything. |
 | This is the Communication Department, not the Communications
Department. |
